The role
Our packaging activities are focused on the packaging development process from the beginning to end: from innovation until implementation and roll out of packaging related to, mainly tubs and lids, bottles and closures, flexibles, as well as corrugated. Packaging is an essential part in delivering new products to consumers and customers, and therefore plays an important role in the execution of new product development projects.
As such, packaging is very important in Upfield innovation plans and has been established as a key capability to drive competitive advantage. Specially now, where our vision is to reduce the use of plastic in our portfolio, with the end vision having a plastic-free packaging!

Within this team, we are looking for a Packaging Development Assistant Manager, reporting to Global Packaging Leader. The location of the Upfield R&D team is in Rotterdam.

You will be responsible to deliver packaging solutions on the Global Upfield portfolio of projects – innovation, supply chain and value improvement.
Working closely with other functions as part of a cross-functional team, the Packaging Assistant Manager will be the packaging project leader on low/medium complexity projects, developing consumer and customer preferred packaging designs. This position will interface with Brand Development, Supply Chain, Procurement, Product development, Processing, CTI, CMI, and Packaging Suppliers, to drive consumer focused innovative and optimized packaging solutions.
Although the main markets of Upfield are Europe and North America, we support all business around the globe, so also other regions such as Africa, South America, or other places around the world are in scope.

Within the role, the packaging development assistant manager will:

  • Lead the packaging stream in innovation projects with low-medium complexity, working with the cross functional project team, ensuring packaging is fit for purpose to meet the packaging brief, and delivered on time, in full.
  • To deliver the content of technical specifications for all packaging components developed in a project.
  • Lead selected suppliers in project work.
  • Work in multi-functional teams (with marketing, supply chain, procurement, quality, product development and other associated functions).
  • To develop and maintain the relevant technical expertise and competencies for self.
  • To participate in building of the packaging capability through involvement in relevant cross group activities.
  • To comply with the Upfield Code of Business Principles and all SHE and QA policies, including the support of product claims, risk management and environmental awareness.


Job Requirements:

  • 3-5 years relevant working experience in a packaging environment
  • Experience in Project Management
  • Bachelors’ degree or equivalent in packaging technology, materials technology or a related discipline
  • Able to work effectively in multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural teams (fluent English is required);
  • Good team player
  • Multi-tasking ability and good organizational skills 
  • Flexibility and independence in work style

Additional Information:
There will be an amount of European travel associated with the role, on average this will probably be around two days/month.
